Being Ready For Your Root Canal Procedure

While a root canal can be among the more common types of dental procedures that are needed to save or restore a patient's teeth, there are many individuals that will simply be unaware of the types of steps that they should be taking to prepare for this procedure.

Prepare Soft Foods For Your Recovery

The recovery from a root canal procedure is not especially long, but a patient will likely be sore for the first couple of days after the root canal has been completed. During this time, the patient will need to limit themselves to only eating foods that are soft. Unfortunately, it is a common mistake for root canal patients to fail to take this step the day or two before their procedure. As a result, they may have a difficult time getting food that they can comfortably eat. Soups, mashed potatoes and protein shakes can be options that you may want to have ready.

Arrange For A Friend Or Family Member To Drive You Home After The Root Canal

It is understandable for patients to want to be heavily sedated when they are undergoing major dental procedures. While this will be able to drastically reduce the amount of discomfort that they experience, it can have lingering side effects that may make them incapable of safely driving home after the procedure. For this reason, you should consider having a friend or family member drive you to and from the appointment. If you are not able to have someone else drive you following the procedure, there are milder local anesthetics that can be used, but these will not be as effective at dulling the discomfort that you may experience during the root canal procedure.

Take Pain Medication Soon After Leaving The Dentist's Office

The effects of the anesthetics that you are given will start to fade soon after you leave the dental clinic. In order to reduce the soreness that you experience following this procedure, you may want to take an anti-inflammatory pain medication soon after leaving the dentist. This will start to take effect as the anesthetics wear off. Furthermore, these medications can limit the swelling that may occur, and this can lessen the soreness that a patient experiences in a day or two following their root canal procedure. In some cases, your dentist may prescribe pain medications, but most patients will find that over-the-counter options can be an effective pain management tool for their recovery.
